Filter media for the Aquarium is an essential addition to the filter and provides for the required surface area which gives the biological filtration required to break down toxic bacteria, ammonia and nitrite for example. The filter operates by passing water through the media. Different types of aquarium filter media perform a specific task and are an important part of the aquarium maintenance cycle. Mechanical forms of filter media are designed to remove solid debris and particles from the water and chemical filter media, for example a nitrate filter pad or ammonia filter pad, are designed to remove pollutants and organic compounds. Using correct filtration media is essential to the health of your aquatic fish and inhabitants. External filters, such as an eheim filter or a rena filter, have facility to allow for a larger range of medias to be used in tandem rather than the internal filters which do not but are superb for reducing particles. Please also see our range of pond filter media.
