When Zeolite Chunks are added to the pond, any toxic ammonia present in the water is taken into the zeolite in exchange for harmless sodium ions. There are a limited number of Ion exchange sites in the zeolite, so eventually it will become exhausted, and no longer available for ammonia uptake.
